• Why make this guide?
Nothing in the blog or this help section is a secret. My mechanic can tell me how to fix my car but chances are my car isn't going to run well after I go under the hood. But when my mechanic explains what he is doing to my car I feel good knowing how it works.
  • Hosting your Video
The place where the video is being played from is where the video is hosted. As an example if a video plays on your site but the video file is on my server, I am hosting the video. For more information click the Video Hosting tab above.

  • Bandwidth
Bandwidth is the amount of downloads in the form of file size.

    Simple example:
Your video is 5 megabytes in file size.
It is downloaded 1000 times in a month.
Your bandwidth is 5000 megabytes(MB) or almost 5 gigabytes (GB)*

Who ever hosts your files pays for the amount of bandwidth used. In the case of video. bandwidth can add up very quickly. After you exceed 1000GB that is called a Terrabyte (TB).

An easy way to calculate bandwidth is:
page views X file size = bandwidth

    * To make matter confusing some video hosts say 1000MB is 1GB. Others say 1024MB is 1GB (more bandwidth, same term). Check your server contract to know how your bandwidth is being billed.
  • Video Size
Often confused there are two video sizes. The first is the pixel dimension of the video, such as 800x400 like the videos on this site. The second is size of the video file, this has direct correspondence to bandwidth usage.
  • Encodeing
Encoding is the act of taking an "uncompressed" video file then shrinking file size using software.

    example:
I have a completed Quicktime video that is 500MBs, I encoded that to a Flash file that is 10MBs.

File encoding is getting better and better. But the smaller the File Size you want the more and more information is "thrown away", meaning less quality.

  • Video Format and Video Codec
Video Format: The easiest way to think of video format is what player will the video work in.

    example:
A quicktime video plays in quicktime player.
A MPEG4 can also play in the quicktime player.

So the file type is different but they are both in the same format.

Video Codec: As above the MPEG4 works in a quicktime player, but the codec Is MPEG4. The funny thing about video codecs is they may play in other video formats. Such as an MPEG4 can also play in a Flash Player.

  • Search Engine Optimization
Search engine's like google use text to index what content is on your site. While video are engaging it can not be fully indexed by search engines. It is important to also have written content on your site.

Videos embedded on you page using a flash player (not a youtube or other video site player) can use metadata to help index the context of your video.
  • Music Choices
    High Impact:
In Hollywood editors edit a movie together then a composer writes music to fit the visual tone of the scene. Unless you have the budget for new music to be produced I feel it is best to find the music that captures the feeling of the project then edit accordingly. This works especially well with high impact visual spots.

    Informative Videos and Tutorials:
Generally tutorials only need opening music or none at all. Music should be something in the background and not driving the pace of the video.
  • Can I use my favorite song?
The easy answer is no. Because of copy write laws and licensing fees using a licensed song is very costly. The good news is we have a music library with selection from every genre you could want.
